Conservative priorities

According to WorldNetDaily, radio personality Michael Savage is busy decrying "the worst betrayal of our country in my lifetime." In fact, Savage wants President Bush to be impeached for it:

"This is much more serious than dropping your pants for an intern," said Savage. "This is a policy that represents a danger to national security."

....

"These people are destroying America," said Savage. "That's all I have to say on the subject. But you can talk about it. Talk about it while you can -- while America is still a free country, because it's not going to last."

What is this imminent (and impeachment-worthy) threat to American national security? Illegal immigrants. The greatest threat in Savage's lifetime.

Is it just possible that there is a conservative conspiracy to prove liberal theories about conservatism correct? Why would a conservative pundit cry for impeachment over the legal status of people who are already inside the country, even while his president struggles to prove that the war he recently started was not based upon flaky evidence? Is that a reasonable prioritization? Why would a conservative pundit use such apparently xenophobic language ("these people are destroying America"), as if to prove that his opponents' theories on conservative motivations are correct?

They don't destroy America, just any hope for getting the minimum wage raised in a nation with skyrocketing living costs.

I think you can certainly make a reasoned case that America doesn't need over a million ADDITIONAL unskilled workers coming in legally each year, along with a half million illegals. But to say they're destroying the country is ridiculous. We need to seriously tighten down our borders, but Savage's type of alarmism is dead wrong.

National Review has been carrying some great, reasonable articles on the immigration situation. No need to waste time on Savage's rantings about the issue.

I certainly don't take the views of Savage as those of all conservatives, nor am I unable to find legitimate reasons for disagreeing with the administration's proposals. (The issue itself does not particularly interest me, actually.) This is simply one more example of conservative leadership shooting itself in the kneecap. In short, I want conservatives to complain loudly when their media representatives say stupid things.
