We have met the liberated, and they are the enemy

Shem, on the Fallujah attacks:

I just watched that video. Those streets were full of Iraqi civilians; most of them looked like they had just gotten off work. Hell, the kids in the crowd looked like they had just gotten out of class.

Bush Administration Press Secretary Scott "The Puppet" McClellan called the attacks "hateful acts designed to intimidate and roll back the democratic progress and the freedom for the Iraqi people." Wake up, Mr. President. These attacks were carried out by the Iraqi people.

I'll repeat the comment that I posted on Shem's blog here:

"by the Iraqi people"

No, by a segment of the Iraqi people- this took place in the Sunni Triangle, aka Saddam's turf- that had it good under Saddam and are both reluctant to give up their power/influence and afraid of what will happen to them if the Shiites and Kurds decide not to let bygones be bygones.

I expect you've come across Zeyad, but if not, his blog is worth reading.

Specifically, his post on Fallujah would be here.

As disgusting and horrible the Fallujah images were, you could see bystanders children there watching casually, if not cheering, without blinking an eye. I would not call those children evil, because sadly they do not realise what they have become. The people that defiled the dead bodies were not technically terrorists, Ba'athists, or insurgents, they were common folk which makes it even more depressing. All respect for humanity has long been lost in a large section of Iraqis. I admit this concept is difficult, if not impossible, to explain to a western audience.

I offer the same response I gave to Andrew on my site:

Yes, we all know Fallujah was a hotbed. The problem? Muslim clerics -- both in and out of the triangle -- will condem the way the dead bodies were treated, NOT the killings themselves. This "new" Iraq will be a hotbed for terrorist breeding like we've never seen before.

The very foundation of their new "Constitution" is that their laws will all "be submissive to Islam." The "Sunni Triangle is the only bad peepelz" argument doesn't hold water under broad scrutiny. Not when Iraq's new leadership will have more in common with Muslim terrorists than the atheistic Saddam Hussein did
