Wilson's Law:

Every political discussion, no matter how innocuous the topic and no matter how much I try to be nice, has the potential to render itself absurd.

This one started getting good when I was challenged to prove my remark that Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh are not "great thinkers."

Interestingly, the history profs at Rebunk touch on the same topic in the post and comments here.

To paraphrase Warnie from the play Shadowlands: "I find its wise never to argue for anything at all."

I read the rebunk post. I appreciated his appreciation of P.J. O'Rourke :-)

However, he expressed some value-judgements that, while potentially true, he didn't back up. His assessment of Hannity, Coulter and Limbaugh as ignorant, for instance. Or his take that people who take Michael Moore seriously scare him.

Not trying to get back into it Jonathan (I'm sure you're glad I've stalked you over to your site :-) - but it goes both ways. If you can't say "Coulter is a great thinker" without backing it up, how can one get away with saying she's "ignorant"?

I'll go away now. Although I should be providing lots of shark-bait over on Thinklings (I'm thinking about re-opening the VDH discussion. You will enjoy gutting and skinning me :0)

The discussion at Rebunk is a bit different than the one at Thinklings, if only because the focus and audience at Rebunk are different. I linked it because I find the perspective interesting; these are historians who hold rather dim opinions of the quality of thought put out by the Ann Coulters and Michael Moores of the world. The commentors at the blog agree on that so far; until someone who finds Coulter insightful speaks up, that will stand as the opinion of the historian.
