Gandhi

Yesterday morning I saw the 1982 film Gandhi for the first time. This movie is magnificent. Since I have no exceptional familiarity with the subject, I will not comment on the film's historicity. Its artistry is splendid.

In particular, Ben Kingsley is master of his title role. The transition he makes from Gandhi as a young lawyer to Gandhi as an elder statesman is utterly convincing. I have never seen better acting, and probably never will.

We watched this film in Non-Western Cultures at Stony Brook my freshman year in highschool. My teacher, Mr. Hostetler, was then in his 43rd year. He has traveled overseas every summer under study grants. He knows many of the coutries we studied better than our books, and he taught about other cultures with a passion only a world traveler could have. Thus I have no reason to question his main statement regarding the movie. "Very close, but they leave out his violent temper." (or words to that effect)
